Ah! I have MRSA!
Based on a true story.
We cultured the inside of our noses last week and then grew them on a MSA plate with a disc of methicillin in the middle. If the plate (which started red) turned yellow, we had Staphylococcus aureus. If it stayed red, we had Staphylococcus epidermis. Staph a. is the ugly one, staph e. is not so concerning. My plate stayed red with the exception of a small ring of yellow around the methicillin. This ring had a few little white dots, so while I mostly have staph e. up my nose, I am carrying around a little bit of MRSA, which is pretty typical. Oh, the joys of microbiology!
